St. Thomas's Hospitall 28: May 1723

Sr.

This comes by Order of the Grand Committee of this Hospitall to
Acquaint you, That upon their view of the Houses & Buildings
in Kent Street lately in Lease to you, They found the Same
exceedingly out of Repaire, and Some part in a ruinous
Condicon, the pavement in the Street very defective, and
the Tenants under presentments for not mending it, And
what is very Strange, The Pump which should Supply the
Tenants with Water, has been Suffered to be wholly useless
for Some considerable time, only for want of laying out a
little money upon it. Friday last some of the Governors
were there again, And sent to the Tenants for the Quarters
Rent due to the Hospitall at Lady day: They all in Generall
made Great complaints, that they could not lye dry in their
Beds, when it Raines, and that their Houses were not
Tenantable

The Governors did not expect you would have
permitted their Houses to be in Such a Condicon Sr. at the
end of your Lease, But since it is so, They as Trustees
for the Poor look upon themselves obliged to Require
from you full Satisfaccon for it.

In order to Settle this Satisfaccon, upon Notice to
me, you will be mett by some of the Governors to try
if it may be done without a Law Suite. If this method
be neglected I am Ordered by the Committee to make out
Processe against you;

I am Sr. Your humble Servtt
