Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Turner in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields within the liberty of Westminster taken upon oath this [blank] Day of December in the year of our Lord 1766. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 26 years of age, that she is the widow of John Turner (who died the 11th Day of June in the year 1764), that since the death of her said husband she this Examinant (having no child living) was a yearly hired servant to John Linley, a Victualler at the sign of the Sun the corner of Broad Court in Long Acre in the Parish aforesaid for the space of one year and five months at the yearly wage of 4 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about two months ago, that she hath not done any act to gain a subsequent settlement, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Linley above-mentioned who is now absconded did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Linley is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Taken in the workhouse the fifth day of December 1766.
