Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Evans now servant to Mr Vernon in Leicester Court in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 19th day of December in the year 1775. This Examiner on her oath saith that she is 23 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to the said Mr Vernon in Leicester Court aforesaid for the space of five years all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 10 Guineas for the first year and five guineas for the second year diet and lodging and yet continues in the said service. And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Peter Moran now to be heard of next door to Sir John Fielding's in Bow Street, had carnal knowledge of her body in the month of May last in upon a bed in a room up five pairs of stairs at the house of Mr Vernon's aforesaid and several times afterwards in the same place at which or one of which times he the said Peter Moran did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Peter Moran is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the Day and year abovesaid before John Goodchild.
