Examination TextThe Examination of Caroline Boyce lodging at Mr [Harmond] a Chandler in King Street Westminster taken this 21st day of November 1775. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 18 years of age and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Birch, Carver, in Mercer Street in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields the space of one year and 11 months all under one hiring at the yearly wages of five guineas diet and lodging quitted the same last September, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin the Fields, And that Joseph Fleming apprentice to the said Mr Birch had carnal knowledge of her body in the month of March last in and upon a bed in the fore Garrett in the said Mr Birch's house and several times after in the same place at which or one of which times he the said Joseph Fleming did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, And that he the said Joseph Fleming is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
