An Abstract of Orders
Toughing the Officers and Poor in St:
Thomas Hospital in Southwark 1699

Court days


Imprimis That the Steward receive no person
into the house but on ordinary Court days, except by order of the prsident
or Treasuer or two Governors: Takers in & in such case the person or
persons shall be presented the Court day following to the end that if
Found incurable they may be discharged

infections diseases


Item That no person be received who is Visited or Suspected to
be visited with the player or other infections Disease & if any such
be taken in then to be put forth as soon as discovered

Item That no person comeing from the adjacent parts, shall be
Admitted without a certificate from a Churchwarden of the Parish
where he or she then lived or other substantial person, with a
promise in case of Death to take away and bury his Corps without
charge to this house except in some extraordinary case to be
aproved by the Governours Takersin

Item That none put out by Takers in for the since being be
received in again by the succeeding takens in except such person
have some new Distemper, oris very probable of Cure; And the
Steward is required to take great care that the new Takers in
be constantly informed of such persons so formerly discharged
when they desire to be taken in again

Doctors & Chyrnrgions are incurable

Item That no Poor person at their entrance pay any money [..]
other thing for Garnish or footing or any other matter, on
pain of expulsion of the person of the person that Demands or
receives it

The poor dressed


Item That the Chirurgions shall cause the poor to be
well & orderly dressed before Tenn of the clock in the forenoon in the
Winter and before inne in the summer fine and that no Doctor.
Chirurgion or Apothecary take any moneys or reward for cure [..]
any poor admitted by the Governors

Item That no person shall be permitted on the score or that [..]
of the hous under ye name or notion of a Skellett Carier, or otherwise to Assistant [..]
wait upon the Apothecary or Chirurgions of this house in their
applications to the Patients but that the whole service be done by
the Apothecary & Chirurgions themselves or Servants kept at the [..]
own charge

Apothecaries Duty


Item That the Apothecary take care that the Physick be
duly administred to the patients accordings to the prescriptions of the [..]

Medicines viewed
4 times a year


Item That the Grand Physical Medicines be dispossed
in this house and that all the physical & Chrisurgical Medicines
be viewed Four times a year by the physicians & Chirugions of the [..]
