New Prison
with two fire places therein for the purpose of Sheltring
the Prisoners in the day time from the Inclemencies of the Weather
and Mr. Rogers having delivered a Sketch of a Shed for the said purpose
and Estimated the Expence of Erecting the same at about Fifty Pounds
the Committee are of Opinion that a Shed be forthwith built in the
North West Corner
of the Mens Court Yard according to the said
Plan and Estimate now in the hands of the Clerk
A Motion was made and Seconded that this Court do approve of this part of the said
Report & the same being carried in the Affirmative It is Order that so much of the said Report as last above
mentioned be Confirmed and the squre is hereby Ratified & Confirmed accordingly, The said Committee further
Report
That having taken into Consideration the necessity of
repairing the place in New Prison
called the Dark Hole and the
State of the North Wall of the Mens Court Yard and it appearing
as well by the Report of Mr. Rogers as upon the View of the Committee
that the Wall is in a very Ruinous dangerous and insecure State the
Committee are of Opinion that the same ought to be forthwith taken down
and rebuilt Correspondently to the South Wall
and that the Dark Hole
(which is a place for the Confinement of Unruly and desperate prisoners)
ought also to be repaired
A Motion & Second was made that this Court do approve of this part of the said
Report and the same being carried in the affirmative It is ordered that so much of the said Report as last
above mentioned to be Conformed and the same is hereby Ratified & Confirmed accordingly
the said Committee
further Report.
That having taken into Consideration the Act of
Parliament passed in the fourteenth Year of his present Majesty
intitled "An Act for preserving the health of prisoners in Goal and
"preventing the Goal Distemper" referred to this Committee by
which Act of Parliament the Justices of the peace
for this County in
their Quarter Sessions assembled are authorized and required to order
the Walls and Cailings of the several Cells and Wards both of the
Debtors and Felons and also of any other Rooms used by the prisoners
in their respective Goals and Prisons where felons are usually
Confined to be Scraped and White Washed once in every Year at
least to be regularly Washed and kept Clean and constantly supplied
with fresh Air by means of hand Ventilators or otherwise It
appeared to the Committee upon Examination that the Walls and
Cielings of the several Cells and Wardes and other Roomes used by the
Prisoners in New Prison
and Clerkenwell
Bridewell
are and have
been carefully Scraped Washed and Cleaned and the prisons in a
healthy State.
And immmediately it was Moved and Seconded that this Court
do approve of this part of the sd. Report and the same was Resolved accordingly
And the sd. Commee
further Report That
It appearing that by the said Act the Justices as
aforesaid are to order two Rooms one for the Men and the other for
the Women to be set apart for the Sick Prisoners directing them to be
