16 July 1717

"Mr Jonathan Norris< no role > chosen Chief Surveyor .- Salary £100 P Ann"

The Comittee observe that the said Norris was a Stranger in the
County of Middx that his constant Residence is in the County
of Bedford , nor had he any other Recomendacon for So
extraordinary an Office but the bare word of a Trustee,
for whose sake it was thought pper to make an Officer
not heard of in other Turnpikes, and that with a very
extravagant Salary.

16 July 1717

Ordered That each Surveyor Vizt. Marsh Halstead & Edwards have
a yearly Salary of 30th.

Edward's Salary Encreased to 40th. P Ann

The Comittee observe that these Salarys are much Larger
then are given in other Turnpikes nor can they apprehend
the reason for it, unless the Relation between the
Surveyors and some of ye, Trustees be considered

17 Sept

"Ordered that where Ditches belonging to the Highways are
"cleansed, or new Ditches made in the Highways where
"the Passages are Stopt to houses or Lands, That the
"Inhitants of the houses & Occupiers of the Lands are
"to build Bridges to the Houses and Lands and not
"the Trustees

The Comittee are of Opinion that this is directly contrary to
the Letter, intent & meaning of the said Act and think
themselves obliged to take notice of this Order of the said
Trustees because several of the Land holders in the Parish
of Islington complained to us that the Trustees had caused
Ditches to be made between the Highways and their
Lands and had refused to build Bridges so that they
were shut out of their Lands and the tho' they had made
application to the Trustees Yet could have [..] Redress,
nor do we find that this Order if reversed or any
Notice taken of the Complaint.

15 Oct

"Bushel of Ballast in a Load or else to forfeit the
"Ballast and days Work

[..] Apr 1718

"each Cart employed and in Case he finds the Cart not to
