Examination TextThe Examination of Sarah Gray singlewoman lodging with Mr Fortune in Plough Court in Harts Horne Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 16th Day of February 1754. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 28 years of [age] and upwards and never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant to Dr James in Craigs Court in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of 13 months at the yearly wages of 6 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about four months ago and never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes, And this Examinant upon her oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Frederick Roberts lately a servant at Dr James aforesaid but now lodging at a Staymaker's in Harvey Court in the Strand had carnal knowledge of her body in the month of August last on a bed in the back Garret at the house of Dr James in Craigs Court aforesaid and several times afterwards at the same place at which or one of which times he the said Frederick Roberts did beget her with the child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Frederick Roberts is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox.
