Examination TextThe Examination of Betty Hall in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 16th Day of July 1776. This Examinant on her oath saith that saith that she is 22 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Hall a Butter seller the corner of Cecil Court in St Martin's Lane in the Parish aforesaid for the space of one year and an half all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 7 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about five months ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes since. And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields and that Manser Hatton late servant to Mr Stockdale in Castle Street Butter seller had carnal knowledge of her body some time in the month of December last in and upon a bed in a fore room up one pair of stairs at the house of Mr Jones at Hampstead and several times afterwards at the same place at which time or one of which times he the said Manser Hatton did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Manser Hatton is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
