Examination TextThe Examination of Jane Powell lodging at number 10 in Langley Street in the Parish of St Martin the Fields taken this fifth day of July 1776. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 33 years of age, that she never was married (except to Robert Marchant a Taylor but now soldier) who was born in that part of Great Britain called Scotland as she this Examinant hath been informed and verily believes, that she was married to the said Robert Marchant at a private house in Bristol after the manner of the Church of Rome the seventh of August in the year 1769, that before her said intermarriage she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Banks at Mr Sharpenny's in Wigmore Street in the Parish of St Mary lebone in the County of Middlesex for the space of four years all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 6 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about 4 or 5 months before her said intermarriage, that she never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since she quitted the aforesaid service, that she was on the third Day of June in the year 1770 delivered at the house of Mr Sharpells [sic] in Wigmore Street aforesaid of a female bastard child (since christened Elizabeth), and also that she was on the 11th or 12th of August in the year 1762 delivered at the house of [blank] in the New James Street in the said Parish of St Mary lebone of one other female bastard child (since christened Christian) both now with this Examinant.
