Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Cassel destitute of Lodging taken this 17th Day of November 1779. This Examinant on her Oath saith That she is about 56 years of age, That she is the Widow of John Cassel who died abroad as she hath been Informed and Verily believes to be true to whom she was Married at the Parish Church of st Catherine by the Tower, London the 22nd Day of February in the year 1748, That her said husband was bred to the Sea and was in Hamburgh as she hath been Informed and verily believes to be true, That her said Husband never kept house or rented a tenement of ten pounds by the year paid any Parish taxes nor was a yearly hired Servant in any one place for twelve months together in England to this Examinant?s knowledge, That she this Examinant before her Intermarriage to her said Husband being single and Unmarried was a yearly hired servant to Mrs. Gambier in York Building in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of seven years all at one time at the yearly Wages of five pounds diet and lodging and then and there Intermarried to her said husband, That she hath not kept house or rented a tenement of ten pounds by the year paid any Parish taxes nor was a yearly hired Servant in any one place for twelve months together since (except at Mr. Gascoinge [sic] an Apothecary in Hungerford Market) and then had two children living by her said husband which said children were about seven and eight years of age.
