Examination TextThe Examination of Hannah Hill singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 22nd Day of St February 1748. This Examinant upon her oath saith that she is 34 years of age and never was married, and further that she was on [blank] Day of January delivered of a Male bastard child (since christened John) in the workhouse aforesaid yet living and become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Macdonnall who is now a Marine in Captain Barker's Regiment of Marines (gone abroad) had carnal knowledge of her body at the house of Mr Slate a Publican in Spitalfields in a room up one pair of stairs backwards in and upon a bed there and several times afterwards at the aforesaid house in the said place and then at the house of Mr Smiths a Cordwainer in Chymister's Alley in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields in the fore Garrett of the said Mr Smiths house in and upon a bed there and several times afterwards at the same place at which or one of which times he the said John Macdonnall did beget on her body the said male to a bastard Child and is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Daniel Gach.
