September 1799.

I never heard Mr.. Raven say how the Certificate came
to the Duke of Portlands Office, Evans was in appearance
in good health when I called upon him to advise him
to prepare himself for the Doctor I Saw him the same
Day he was liberated and We took our Wine together
and he appeared very well I never applied to Mr.. Webb
for the Certificate or had any Conversation with him
about the Certificate to my belief I never Saw Mr.. Webb
but once at Mr.. Aris's house< no role > I never Conversed with
any one but Mr.. Aris on that subject; - I believe the
Certificate was the only cause of his being liberated
I know of no other. Cause.

My Inducement to bring forward this Evidence
was from being wrote to by Mr.. Justice Nares I should
never have applied if I had not been called upon by
that Gentleman. - the first Letter from Mr.. Nares
came when I was from home, I wrote to Mr.. Nares
afterwards. - I stated what I have now stated
and this clerk took it down; - I never had any
Conversation with Mr.. Nares till after Letter except
a Word at Guildhall

Upon being interrogated by the Chairman
whether he was not Guilty of a flagrant Offence in
thus endeavouring to Effect the Escape of a Prisoner
"Answered." - I thought what I did was wrong
but did not know I was liable to be punished.
Was you ever in the Lottery Way.? - Never
Was not Evans Your Servant at the time he was
Committed: - he was not , - he is not now in
the Lottery way - Do not you know that he has
for. 5. or. 6. Years attended Races with C. O. Tables
I know he has attended Races but do not know whether
with an E. O. Table, I saw him at Epsom once, I never
had any concern in the Lottery myself;

Mr.. Aris desired to know who said he had
behaved illiberally towards Witness - Witness
declined Answering this Question, - Qr. whether Mr..
