September 1799.

my Memory as to the Words only it was not strong
enough - if he was continued in Goal it might Cost
him his Life.. Mr.. Estcourt told me it was not strong
enough, - , Evan Evans< no role > is in Town is at his
Sisters who keeps the Fox at Hungerford Market
I saw him on Sunday I called there this Morning
he had not gone out about 10 Minutes I called
for the purpose of bringing him with me he told
me he had not been sent to by Clerk of the peace
otherwise I do not doubt he would have come;
I do not know who applied to the Doctor of the
Prison for Evan's Pardon I never heard who took
it to the Duke of Portlands or how it came there
I came forward to Mr.. Nares in Consequence of a
Conversation arising at Guildhall under a Comms
of Bankruptcy - I saw Mr.. Raven several times
from the last Certificate being left and Pardon
obtained I called at the Office of Duke of Portland
and asked Mr.. Raven if he had heard any thing
from the Stamp Office relative to Evans - he said
there was a Pardon Ordered for him and that
it was gone down to the King; -

The first time I saw Raven after Certificate
being left at the Stamp Office was the next Evening
or within 1. or 2. Evenings dont recollect I had
any Conversation, - I told him I had left Certificate
at the Stamp Office and he said if Commissioners
were inclinable to forgive him he did not doubt
but that he would come to the Dukes Office as a
matter of course; - I told him the Certificate
stated he was in a bad state of Health, - Evans
did not appear to be ill I believe he was not ill
but Evans told me had taken no Food for 2 Days
in Order to prepare himself for the Doctor to make
himself low for the Doctors Examination I went
and told him to prepare himself; - I think he was
very well he appeared very well when he came out
I did not see him after he had so starved himself
