John Davies< no role > of Bishopsgate Street London Salt Merchant John Chapman< no role > of
Liverpool in the County of Lancaster late one of the Mariners belonging to the Ship
or Vessell called the Joseph whereof William Harrison< no role > was late Master
and Thomas Jones< no role > of Oxon in the County of Chester late one of the Mariners belonging to the
Ship or Vessel called The Ashton whereof Robert Thompson< no role > was late
Master severally make Oath and first the said John Davies< no role > for himself
saith that on the Twenty third Day of October last past Six thousand
sevenhundred and eighty Bushels of English refined Salt were shipped
on board the said ship or vessell called The Joseph at Liverpool aforesaid
as appears to this Deponent by a certain Bill of Lading under the Haire
of the said William Harrison< no role > bearing date the said Twenty third Day of
October last in order to be conveyed by Sea to the Port of London for and
on Account of this Deponent the Owner of the said Salt And this
Deponent saith that the Duty for all the said Salt hath been paid to
His Majesty< no role > And this Deponent the said John Chapman< no role > for himself
saith that on or about the Fifteenth Day of November last the said Ship or Vessell
called the Joseph with the said Salt on board set sail from Liverpool aforesaid for the
Said Port of London And that on or about the Twenty fifth day of
the said Month of November the said Ship or Vessell called the Joseph with the said
Salt on board in the Course of her Voyage to London upon the High
Seas off Beachy Head< no role > was taken by certain persons then being on
board a certain private Ship of War called the Harpooner belonging to
certain subjects of the French King then and still being Enemies of and
at War with the King of Great Britain And this Deponent further saith
that the said Ship or Vessell called the Joseph with the said Salt on board was carried
into the Port of Havre De Grace in the Kingdom of France and there
detained and kept for the benefit of the Owner or Owners of the said
