taken before me this 27th: day of January 1781
Who being upon Oath say and first the said James Hesselgrove< no role >
says that on Thursday the 18th: day of
January instant, in the Evening, his said Martin Stables in Durham
Yard
near Chick Lane
in the City of London
was robbed of Two Bridles
now produced a Great Coat a Shirt, a Neckcloth and Handkerchief
And the said Charles Jealous< no role >
for himself says, that as he was passing
along in Long Land Smithfield
on Friday Night the 19th instant
between 9 & 10 o Clock, he perceived a person now present who calls
himself Charles Stokes< no role >
going by him That on looking at him
and Speaking to him he saw something concealed under his Coat
which appeared to be a Bundle That he immediately Called
not Stop Thief on which the said Stokes ran away that he
pursued him and found him lying on the Ground in Charter house
Square and a Man (unknown to this Informant) was standing
over him That on asking him what he had done with his
Bundle which he at that time suspected to be Pistols, the said
Man told him, that he saw said Stokes run up to some Rails
in Charterhouse Square
and that he thought Stokes had thrown
his Bundle over into the Square That on examining within
the Railing of said Square he found the said Two Bridler
now Produced And the said James Hesselgrove< no role >
further says that from the above
Circumstances he doth verily believe the said Stokes is the person that feloniously stole the said Bridles
