"to the Committee of which a Copy is now in their possession I also
"expressed my displeasure to the Workmen (for the Contractor himself
"I never saw at the Building) and particularly at one time observing
"not a single Shore on the floor of one House to support it tho'
"all the partitions were removed I told the workmen that some
"accident would certainly happen if more care was not taken. For
"further particulars as to their disregard of caution and advice I
"beg leave to refer to the Labourer in trust's account who speaks to
"those facts I have also again to observe that the Plans & particulars
"are plain and explanatory and were allowed to be so by all the
"Workmen who made offers for doing the business, & the Contractor
"was pointedly asked that question by the Committee & surely
"the Committee will think if the Contractor discovered in the
"progress of the work any thing that rendered the business either
"dangerous or impracticable (neither of which I by any means
"allow to be the case) it was his duty to point it out and call
"for advice. On the whole I have not the smallest doubt but that
"the work might have been carried into execution by any careful
"Workman but that this might not rest on my Assertion singly
"I have desired the opinion of some of the most respectable and
"skilful Builders in the City of London whose report fully
"corroborates my own and their Certificate to that Effect marked
"No. 1. accompanies this letter."

"The Committee also by this time I hope are in possession of
"Mr. Delights report"

"To give more authenticity to the fact the Labourer in trust has
"made an Affidavit to the circumstances that come within his
"knowledge and is the paper marked No. 2"

"Mr. Creswell the Surveyor who for me and at my desire during
"my confinement prepared and drew up the particulars of the work
"has also made an Affidavit of its practicability & is marked No. 3

"All these papers I inclose and beg the Committee to refer to.
"Having now laid all these papers before the Committee which
"I think a justice due to myself I have nothing further to add
"but that I remain

"Gentlemen

"To the Gentlemen of the Prison
"Committee Bridewell Hospital

"Your Most Obedient
"and hum: Servt.
J. Lewis."
