Examination TextThe Examination of Sarah Smith singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 26th Day of October in the year of our Lord 1757. this Examinant on her oath saith that she is 22 years of age, and that she never was married bound an apprentice kept rented 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant, that her father John Smith was a Glazier and lived in and rented an house opposite the Church in St Martin's Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields aforesaid for several years at the yearly rent of 30 pounds besides taxes, and there died about 21 years ago, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Mr Smith a Shoemaker who lives next door to the Trunkmaker the corner of St Paul's churchyard had carnal knowledge of her body about the month of February last on a bed in the fore Garrett of the house of Mr Deale in Phenix Alley in Long Acre in the Parish St Martin in the Fields aforesaid at which time he the said Mr Smith did beget on her body the said child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Mr Smith is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox.
