Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Davis lodging with Mrs James in the Nags Head Inn Yard in Hedge Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this seventh Day of January in the year 1778. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 20 years of age and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Powell a Silversmith near Craigs Court in the Parish aforesaid for the space of 15 months all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 5 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about 20 months ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the fourth Day of July last delivered at the house of Mr Whitehead the sign of the Angel and Crown in Hungerford Market in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields of a Male bastard child (since christened Samuel) yet living and is become chargeable to the Parish aforesaid, and that Samuel Taylor a Porter to Mr Ashton who keeps wine vaults near Chandos Street in St Martin's Lane did beget on her body the said Male bastard child, and that he the said Samuel Taylor is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the seventh Day of January 1778 before J. Hale, Thomas Bullard.
