Examination TextThe Examination of Sarah Stevens lodging with Mr Harris a Taylor in the Garret at Mr Smith's a Victualler at the sign of the Green Man and French Horn in St Martin's Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 18th Day of December in the year 1777. This Examinant on her oath saith she is 34 years of age September last, that she is the widow of William Stevens (who died about six years ago), that since the death of her said husband (she having no child living) she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Dutreemore a Jeweller in Oxendon Street in the Parish aforesaid for the space of two years and an half all under one hiring at the yearly wages of eight guineas for the first year and at the yearly wages of 10 Guineas for the remainder of the said time, diet and lodging, quitted the said service June or July last, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes since, and this Examinant on her oath saith that she was on the 25th day of November last delivered at the Lying-in Hospital in Tottenham Court Road of a female bastard child (not yet christened) yet living and is become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Patrick Clifford a journeyman Locksmith lately working for Mr McKinzie in St Martin's Street (but is now absconded) did beget on her body the said female bastard child, and that he the said Patrick Clifford is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the [blank] Day of [blank] 177 before [blank].
