Examination TextThe Examination of Elizabeth Davies in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this fourth Day of August 1772. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 23 years of age and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Smith, Bridle Cutter the lower end of St Martin's Lane in the Parish aforesaid for the space of one whole year and upwards all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 5 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about two years ago, that she never kept house rented tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the second Day the of June last delivered in the workhouse aforesaid of a Male bastard Child (since christened William) yet living and is become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Curtis, late a Clerk to Mr Hadley, Engine Maker in Long Acre, but where he now is cannot tell, had carnal knowledge of her body the month of October last in and upon a bed on the ground floor at the house at Mrs Ryley's in Moors Yard in St Martin's Lane and several times afterwards in the same place at which or one which times he the said John Curtis did beget on her body the said Male bastard child, and that he the said John Curtis is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before me Charles Marsh.
