Examination TextThe Examination of Sarah King singlewoman taken upon oath this 12th Day of November 1739. Upon her voluntary oath saith she is 26 years old, that she never was married, that on Friday the 22nd Day of September last past she was delivered at a female bastard child (afterwards christened Eleanor) in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields within the liberty of Westminster in the County of Middlesex yet living and become chargeable unto the said Parish of St Martin, and also further saith that one Edward Rowe (who lately belonged to a gaming house in Bridges Street in the Parish of St. Paul Covent Garden and since lived with one Mrs Boucher in Earls Court in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields) had carnal knowledge of her body several times in the month of December last in the Garret at the house of the said Mrs Boucher in Earls Court aforesaid (she this Examinant then being servant to the said Mrs Boucher and lodging in the said Garrett) at which or one which times he begot on her body the said female bastard child, and that he the said Edward Rowe is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the 12th Day of November 1739 before William Miller, James Fraser. [In the margin and scored through:] Ran away 30th October 1739 and took the child with her.
