the County as a Surveyor unless the Gentlemen conclude my being in
the Commission of the Peace is a reason why I am not to receive the
Benefits of my profession. I wonder no Entry appears in the Books
relative to the Matter; as I have been employed and paid as a Surveyor
before the commencement of the business I sent an Account of in my Letter
to the Chairman. I trust upon recollection many of the Justices must
remember frequent reports from me concerning the progress of the several
works under my direction. I am certain I never even hinted I meant
to do this business Gratis; for me to make a present to the County of
Middlesex at large not only of my Time (wch. when I was in business
was very valuable to me) but also of my Expences during a long course
of Attendances, is what I think can never be supposed I meant to do;
I never said I wod, it was never asked of me. I am out of Pocket a
very considerable Sum of Money for myself and Clerks in travelling
Expences, measuring the works and other necessary Business as a
Surveyor. I must beg this Matter may be reconsidered. I surveyed
the several works I have mentioned in my Account, The Tradesmen
who did the work if called upon will inform the Sessions, they acted
under me as the Surveyor; nothing was done without my direction,
I examined and signed their Bills before they were paid; and have
disbursed a large Sum in the Course of the business.

This is the situation I am in with respect to the County of Middlesex
Unless it can be made appear I undertook to do the business, I have
sent an Account of without a Satisfaction I trust it will be thought
in reason and common Justice as well as in Law, I am intilled to the
Demand I make. I beg to know the Resolution of the Sessions as
soon as it is convenient to them to reconsider this Matter.

I am Sir

Your most obedient Servant
