We the Grand Jury of the City of London Sworne to Enquire
for our Sovereign Lord the King and the Body of the City of London on Monday the
Ninth day of October Anno Dnd 1721 in the Eighth year of the Reign of our
Sovereign Lord King George of Great Brittain Etc And Adjorned to Justicehall in the
Old Baily London

It having been represented to us by this Honble Court That his Majesty hath been pleased to
express his great concern for the Welfare of his people by timely recommending it to the Magistrates
in the Several Cities and Countys of this Kingdom to use their ut most endeavours for the preserving the
healths and live of his Subjects as far as human help can possibly extend for the preventing by the
blessing of God the Effects of the dreadful Contagion the Neighbouring Kingdom is Yet Visited
with from coming upon us.

We therefore in Obedience to the directions of this Court and from the Just Apprehensions of so
griesons a Judgment which we pray God to Avert Present it as highly necessary for the
keeping the Streets of this City Sweet and clean That the Several Scavengers of this City or those
employed under them be Stricklly obliged and enjoyned to do their Duty in their Offices by a more
frequent attendance in the Streets and Overseeing their Rakers whose business is to Sweep and
carry off the Seyt.

Also We present it as a very go at Nusance That any Butchers Should Kill any
Cattle in the Publick Markets the blood of which being Lett into the Streets may produce
us Effect as also the great Quantity of Soil and Filth left in and about the Borders of the
Several Marketts with in this City by Gardiners Carts and others bringing herbs Roots & fruit
thither And the better to facilitate the Cleansing theStreetsSame more especially on Saturday nights
We desire the Several fruit Shops Herb Shops and Stalls may be confined to Shall up at a
certain hour who now Sitt there till one or two of the Clock in the morning And that this Court
would enjoy in the constables and Watchmen (Who must needs be Sensible of the great quantities
of Soil past into the Streets in the night time when the Inhabitants have Stunt up their houses)
to date it Such persons and bring them to Justice And also all Such who [..] Sweep the Soil & dirt of their
Shops and houses into the Streets Lanes and passages of this City leaving it there whereby the
passengers are much Annoyed in their Officers

Also We present the defective Pavements in and about the Streets of this City by
reason whereof much Muck and dirt is collected and Lodged in the Streets And humbly
recommend it to the Right Honble the Lord Mayor or this City to whom we return our
thanks for his Vigitance in that matter, Farther to enjoyn the proper officers of his
Lord Ship house hold to be impartial in detecting and prosecuting all Such as Shall be
found Culpable therein The pavements being Kept in repair will both contribute to the
Safety of the passengers as also to the better cleansing the Streets.
