Who being upon Oath saith that a person now present who
calls himself Edward Tapp< no role >
came to the Shop of Messrs. Jefferies
and Jones Jewellers
in Cockspur Street
about Six o' Clock
last Night, and desired to select some Diamond for Ear-Rings,
that a Cabinet of Diamond was produced to the prisoner
by Mr Jones, who took out three or more Drawers there from
containing Diamonds, and this Informant Stood by at the Time
the Drawers were taken outthat the prisoner selected
Several Diamond from the Drawers and put them upon
the Counter, and the Drawers were then replaced in the
CabinetAnd this Informant further says that he saw
the said Tapp take one of the Diamonds
which lay on
the Counter, with a Pair of Corn Tongs which he held in
his right Hand and with his left hand took the Diamond
from the Tongs and put it into the left hand pocket of
his WaistcoatInformant then acquainted Mr. Jones
with the Circumstance, who thereupon accused the Prisoner with
having the Diamond in his possession, [..] which the prisoner
denied, but upon Informant telling Mr. Jones that the
Diamond then was in prisoner's pocket, the Prisoner took
the Diamond from his said pocket laid it upon the Counter and
said "there it is"and that that the Diamond now produced is the same which
the prisoner he so delivered
