provided for the inferior Class at Bridewell your Committee
is of Opinion that the introduction of born. Hand Mills into
the Hospital would be a better and much more production
species of labour than that which is now used. That
your Committee is informed that the labour of one Man
will in four Hours, grind a Bushel of Corn, and that two
Persons will with case, grind the same guantity in two
hours and a halfYour Committee therefore submits
that this Kind of labour will an sever a great deal better
than that of Picking Oakum, an employment calculated
to promote habits of dirtiness and idleness rather than
of cleanliness and exertion. That the task of Corn to be
ground by each Person in the day might be Kept separate
and distinct from his Cell, and have no other communication
that of the handle thro the Wall, and that when his
daily task was done he might if he chose be supplied
with more Work, the profit of which he should have
reserved fro him. That by such a Species of labour,
not only the two united Hospitals might be supplied
with good and genuine Flour but such a guantity sent
into the consumption of the Market as might have a
tendeney to reduce the Price of Bread.
