The several Minutes of the Prison Committee of the 12th. of December the 9th. and 24th of January
were then read whereby it appeared that the Committee had transacted the following
Business.
That they had Ordered written notices to be sent to each of the Artsmasters of the several
resolutions of the Court respecting them which had been done.
That the Committee were of opinion that the present Matron and Porter being incapable from age
and infirmities of performing their respective duties ought to be superannuated upon
such annuities as the Court might think fit.
And the Committee were further of opinion that the Senior Beadle and his Wife are properly
qualified and fully competent to perform the several duties of Porter and Matron with
such salary as the Court should think fit and that in the present state of the Prisons
it would not be necessary to elect another Beadle.
And the Committee resolved that the President and Treasurer by requested to confer with
the other Aldermen of the City of London how far they are authorized to commit persons
to this Hospital for the purpose of being kept in safe custody who are afterwards to receive
their punishment by order of Sessions and also diseased and sick persons untill they
can be admitted into the Hospital; the Committee being of opinion that such
Committments are not within the intention of this institution which requires that all
persons admitted into the Hospital of Bridewell be kept to hard labor.
Recommendations
of prison Committee
That the Committee having repeatedly taken into Consideration the order of referrence from the
General Court for rendering the charity and Prison of Bridewell as respectable and as
extensively useful as possible
andhad resolved
That all persons who are sent to this Hospital for punishment ought to be kept in solitary
confinement and a reasonable portion of work assigned to them every day.
That all Vagrants committed to this Hospital to be passed to their respective Parishes be
not confined in solitory Cells but that they be obliged to perform the same proportion of
work as the prisoners.
