be paid £26 towards
Relief of their Poor
Upon Reading the Humble Petition of the Inhabitants of Bridewell
Precinct
Setting forth That in the Year 1701 when £24 was first allowed
by the governors
towards defraying the Expences of the Poor of the Hospital &
Precinct the whole Annual Expences did not Exceed £66 since which time it
has annually increased in somuch that the last Years Expences amounted to
to £44 & aftwards and will for this Year be considerably more occasioned
not only by Increase of Poor but by the Number of Premises Appertaining to the Hospitals
which are Uninhabited and others that have lately been pulled down so that out
of £50 Houses which formerly paid to the poor there are this Time only Thirty
There is also a Considereable Docrease in the New River Office Payment, it being hereto fore
charged with £16..12..P Annum Poors Rate and will now only pay the Sum
of £8 P Annum. A further Decrease arises from the Decease of Artsmasters
in the Hospital there being now only 12 remaining out of 18 That out of the Number of
Poor Chargeable upon the Pets there are 11 who claim it from Servitude in the Precinct
&7 from the Hospital. That the £24 when first allowed was nearly one third of the
then Expences and that £50 will now bear only a like proportion to the Present Expences
which the Petrs. humbly requested to be allowed It is Ordered that the Steward of
this Hospital do pay unto John Packer< no role >
the late Chapel Warden
the Sum of £26 in
Aid of the Deficiency mentd. in the said Petition But that the Ancient Allowances of
£6 P Quarter only be paid as usual until further Order
