At this Court the governors after Named Vizt. Charles Henry

were Chosen Stewards for the next Election Day who are desired to
provide a Dinner at their own bien venue for the President Treasure
and governors to dine together according to Ancient Custom and
in Case any of the Stewards Elected shall decline in refuse the same
the Clerk is to supply the same in Counsel

Upon Reading a Lettd from and an Humble Petition of James Conling< no role >
of Northleigh in the County of Oxford in the words and Figures following
Vizt. Sir with Submission to you I have presumed to Trouble you with
the Inclosed Petitions wherein I have mentioned and set forth the Distressed
Situation I am in And as I have been Advised by most of my Particular
Friends and Acquaintance to lay my Case before the Worshipful the Govrs humbly
Intreat the favour of your to be so kind as to deliver the same to them at their next
Meeting & hope the Worshipful governors will be so kind as to take the Matter into
their Consideration & will with a great Deal of Pleasure wait on them in Town
whenever they will please to Order meNortheigh March 16th 1771
And which Petition sets forth that the Govrs having a Turn to Clat Northleigh in the
County of Oxford the Petr on 16th. Apr 1761 Entred into a Agremt with Henry
Kynaston Southouse
< no role > Esqr on behalf of the Governs to take the same from Lady Dar their
last past at he Rent of £200 a Year & under the Usual Richd Cheas imposed on Servants and
that it was agreed on the Govrs. part That there shod be Elected a New Manston House Dairy
Brewhouse Barns Stables, Cowhowdes, with a Farm Yard, Richd Yard & other Offices
& Buildings according to a Plan Produced to the Petitioner before Michs 1762. That
the Farm consists of about 320 Acres neat part of which when the Petr Eastrod was Common
Field Lane in a very impoverished State & Condition and the rest (except about 7 Acres of Mendow)
Consisted of a Fact of Ground called the Heath Allotmt Just taken out of a Poor Adjoing Common
& which had never recd the least Cathisation whatrThat besides the Agreemt to Besides
a new Houses & sd offices & Conveniences before stated It was also agreed that the Govrns shod Mound
& Divide all the Common Field Lands & Heaths Allotmts. either with Ditches & Quicks Hedges
a Walls & lay the same out in Convenient Grounds as soon as conveniently could be done and
makes proper and convenient Ponds in the Grounds-That the Petr. in full Considenes of the
Agreements being performed on the Govrs. part Entred on the Farm & Got a good Stock of Sheep & Cattle
thereon & hoped not only to pay the Rent Regularly but also to have acaquired a comfortable
Subsistance for himself and his Family But Petitioner humbly Represents That he was
put to very great Inconveniences Damages & Expences by the Farm Houses Stables Cowhouses
& other Offices being neglected to be Compleated according to the Contract and That when the
Hedges round the now Inclosures were at first set with Quick, they were so unskilfully Plasited
that great part of them Died by reason whereof & the Dupress of the season most part Miscarried
& the same were obliged to be Planked again in same Places 3 times over-That the
Petr. was at the Expence of Carrying all the Bushes & Stakes great part from their Forest of
Whitwood at 7 or 8 Miles Distance for which he had no Allowance on Satisfaction
That the Petitioner has Received great Damages in his Corn & Grain the the Defect of
the Feners as well from his own as his Neighbours Cattle Sheep & Swine & has been obliged
to keep & employ ten Boys Extraordinary to preserve & like care of the same That
the Petrs Rent to so high and the Bargain so Dear that with these atmost Labour & Industry he
has not been able to pay his Rent & by the Poverty & Ill Condn of the Term with the Losses of
Sheep & Cattle which he has sustained to the amount of above £500 is become greatly in
Arrear & unable to discharge the same or to make good his farther Payments & is distressed
& Dejected in his Maid that unless the Govrs take his Case in to bone" the Petr. Apprehends
it will be his Aller Ruon-Therefore most humbly Prayed the Govrs would Consider
his Situation & make him such Allowance in respect of the Damages & Expences he has
Sustained & the work & Labour he has done by himself his Teams & Servants & make
him such Abatemt of Res as well for the shine past as to come or view him such
other Relief as the Govrs shod think proper It is Ordered that the said
several Matters contained in the said Letter and Petition be and the same are
hereby referred to the House Committee that they do Consider the same and
Report their Opinion thereon to the Court
