Upon Reading a Report from the Committee of this House being date the 17th. day of
July last under the hands of John Lock< no role > Esqr Phineas Cheek< no role > Esqr W Deputy John Clarke< no role >
Mr. John Whalley< no role > & [..] as following ViztAt this Comttee the Petition of W John
Duffield
< no role > of Bridewell Precinct London Timber Merchant (which was referred to them by
the Court the 22d of June last) was read Setting forthThat the Govrs. by Indre of
Lease daced 11th. Decr 1738 Deceased to Christopher Appleby< no role > Esqr (since deced) a peice of
Ground & Messe and buildings thereon Erected on the Westside of the High way between
the Chappel Yard & Bridewell dockAnd one other peice of ground or Wharfe on the
Westside of Bridewell Dock except to the Governors Their Officer & Artsmaster Liberty to
Land & carry over Sd. Wharfe All such Wood Coals & other Goods as they shall have
Occasion for their own use without paying Warfage To hold from Xmas 1731 for 21 Years
at £10 P Ann rent clear of Taxes And in Cons of a Fine of £180 which Lease will
expire at Xmas 1752That the Petr proposes to take a Lease of the sd premes from
the expiration of the sd Lease in being for 21 Years at the rate of £10 P Ann Clear of Taxes
& to pay a Fine of £130 & to lay out £200 in Necessary repairs & to execute a Counterpart
And the sd. Mr. Duffield being called in Offered to make the Fine £140& being called
in a Second time said he wou'd make it £150Whereupon this Comittee haveing
considered the same are of Opinion that a Lease be made to the said John Duffield< no role >
According to his proposal with usuall Covenants & a Covenant that he will within 3 Years
Layout £200 in Necessary repairs and give the Governors a true Account thereof when
required And that he or the Tenant or Occupyer of the said Messe or Tenement
from time to time will Serve the Office of Chapple Warden of the sd. precinct when
Elected thereto in the usual MannerAnd will pay to the Chapple wardens of
the said Hospital and Precinct for the time being all such Sums of Money as at
the usuall Meetings Commonly called Vestry Meetings of the Chapplewardens
and Inhabitants of the sd. Precinct shall from time to time be rated or Assessed
