Steward of Bridewells Kept
of his haveing waited on them}


Mr. Acton Steward of Bridewell Hospital made his Report in Writing to this Court
dated 17th. of May Instant as followsIn Obedience to an Order made at a Court
holden at this Hospital on Friday 29th. April last. I have endeavoured to see the
Aldermen who were Elected before April 1743 and have seen 4 of them Vizt.

Sir Edward Bellamy< no role > who gave me for Answer, that if he had been Chosen a Govor.
before he was Chosen an Alderman I called apon in Turn to Serve Steward he
wod. have Served it but as he became a Governor only by being Chosen an Alderman
and is now very old & infirm he desires to be excused.

Sir John Thompson< no role > , told me he never comes to Bridewell , That he is grown Old
and is very in irm, & desires to be excused.

Sir William Calvert< no role > , told me that he was ready & willing to have served some
years agoe if he had been called upon, since when there has been two Nominations
of New Governors, & the Aldermen being new called imediately after one of those
Nominations they have it under their further Consider alien especially as they
Apprehend they have been postpon'd by Younger Governors being called upon and
Serveing before them, but if they have not been so Postpon'd he shall be ready to serve
another time.

Sir Samuel Pennant< no role > told me he is willing to serve it but Supposes there is no least
of his Answer to serve this year, but that next year may be soon enough
George Arnold< no role > Esqr . has wrote me word, That it is not Agreeable to him to serve
the Office of one of the Stewards of the Election Feast this Year

These are all the Answers I have yet been able to get, altho I have endeavoured

of an Order of Court the 29th. of April last have enquired into the Duty & profits
of the Steward of Bethlem & do find that the Duty of his Office is as it was laid
before the Court the 6th. of May 1736 (to witt)

To Enter the Names of all the Patients Admitted the Parishes in which are
their respective Settlements and the Names & places of Abode of their Securities

To Enter in a Book all Moneys reced by him

To see that all the provisions Contracted for be rightly delivered as to the
Quantity & Quality and Cause to be Augmented or diminished as the Exigence
of the House requires

To take Care that all Stores not Court acted for be of the best Sorts and at
reasonable rates to the best of his Judgment

To Provide & deliver out all necessary Bedding & Cloathing for the Patients

To Enter all the Patients Discharges

To receive all the Annuitys

To Adjust & receive all Payments due for Incurables

To receive from Mr. Trear all Sumes of Money out of the Poors box and
otherwise as are requisited to pay the Bill Passed by the Comittee
