Liberty of Westminster and parts adjacent "It appeared to and
was the opinion of the Committee that the Clause in the said Bill
"which vested a power in the Commissioners to remove Nuisances
"Annoyances and Obstructions and otherwise regulate such
"Streets and places as have not been already new paved" tended
to divest the Justices of their Interest in and authority over the
St. James Haymarket and that all possible means should
be used to prevent the said Clause from being a part of
the said Bill and this opinion of the Committee was ordered
to be Transmitted to those bodies of Men residing in Westminster
and parts adjacent who had declared themselves over so to
any new Jurisdiction over the Haymarket Vizt. the Hackney
Coach Masters Brewers Coal Merchants War fingers and
Stable Keepers and also to her grace the Dutchess of Newcastle
and the Marquis of Caermarthens And Colonel Brettell
one of the Members of the Committee was at the same time
desired to acquaint Sir Charles Whitworth< no role > wish the said
Resolutions Colonel Brettell in Consequence of this request
of the Committee attending the meeting of the Commissioners
for paving Westminster and objected to the Clause above
mentiones as highly injurious to the Interest of the County
and proposed it to the Commissioners that these words vizt. the
St. James 's Haymarket always excepted. should be added to
the Clause but that the Commissioners refused to admit such
addition however Mr. Brereton of the Commissioners
draw up a Clause which the rest of the Commissioners agreed
to insert in the Bill at the same time protesting they would
not give their Consent to any other but the Committee thinking
this Clause not sufficiently Comprehensive they resolved to
oppose every part of the Bill in its progress thro' Parliament
and the following Gentleman immediately pledged themselves
in Case it should become necessary to subscribe such a Sum
as is Placed against each of their Names towards defraying
the Expence of such opposition Vizt.
