Middlesex to Wit


The Information of James Fegen< no role > Master
of his Majesty's Frigate the Drceid taken
before me this 17th. day of September 1788

Who being upon Oath says that at about 11 o Clock in
the Night of the 30th. of January last being then in
Plymouth Sound he went in the twelve Oar Boat
belonging to said Frigate with 16 or 17 Men in pursuit
of a Smuggling Lugger< no role > That John Rennie< no role >
Midshipman belonging also to the Drceid went in
the lesser Boat with eight Men to assist this
InformantThat when this Informant got near
Shore in Cawsand Bay and came within Pistol Shot
of said Lugger several Musquets and fire Arms were
fired by Some Persons, unknown to this Informant,
in said Lugger at this Informant and his Crew,
and is very sure said Fire Arms were loaded with
Shot, That this Informant ordered said Rennie to
board said Lugger on the Larboard Side while he
this Informant boarded her on the Starboard side
That when this Informants Boat got under the Stern
of said Lugger he order'd his Men to board her
That at this time he saw several Men standing
upon the Deck a baft said Lugger who were active
in opposing their getting on boardThat as he this
Informant was Climbing over the Stern of said
Lugger a Musquet was fired, by some Person on
Board her, close to this Informants Face and he
forth with received a violent Blow, from the Butt End
of a Musquet, as he believes, which grazed his
Head, Struck him on the Shoulder and knock'd him
backward into his Boat, which render'd him in sensible
for a short space of timeThat when he came to
himself he [..] heard one of his Men say he was
much wounded and that another was killedThat
this Informant then got on Board said Lugger where
he found several of his People driving the Luggers
Men down the forecastle in which he assisted
