The Information of James Martin
of High Holborn
Live Poulterer Taken the
24th. day of June 1784.
Who upon his Oath saith That on Saturday
last about the hour of One oClock in the afternoon
a great Risk and Affray happened in Broad Street
in the Parish of Saint Giles in the fields
in the said,
County between some persons appearing to this Informant
to be Revenue Officers and a Gang of Smugglers
who were Armed with large Sticks a Blunder buss a
Pistol and Cutlass That they Assaulted and very much
beat and wounded the said Officers and in particularly
Machen Simpson and William Filley< no role >
Two Excise
Officers and one of the Assailants presented a large
Blunter buss to the said William Filley< no role >
and
threatened to Blow his Brains out if he did
not keep back and then the said person ran off up
Bow Street
Bloomsbury
and followed a Horse and
Cart which had been Taken away from the Officers
And this Informant saith Taht one John
