aforesaid Ostler taken before me this 10th. day
of May 1783
Who being upon Oath says and first the said William
Hawkes< no role >
says that about nine oClock last Night he was robbed by
two Foot pads who appeared to be Soldiers, were in Soldiers Uniform
and had two Bayonets
at Red Hill near Edgware in Middlesex
of ten pence in MoneyThat immediately after the Robbery he
acquainted the said Aldridge Hawkes< no role >
(his Brother) that he had been
robbed by two Soldiers, who went in pursuit of them, in consequence
of which two Soldiers now present who call themselves Thomas
Rogers< no role >
and John Liddell< no role >
were apprehended; and further saith that he
is very sure that the said Thomas Rogers< no role >
is one of said two Footpads
and that he doth verily believe the said John Liddell< no role >
to be other
that so robbed him as aforesaidAnd the said Aldridge Hawkes< no role >
says that on his Brother telling him that he had been robbed by two
Soldiers he with she said Francis Andell sat out in pursuit of
them on HorsebackThat at the 5 Mile Slab on the Edgware
Road
they overtook the said Thomas Rogers< no role >
and John Liddell< no role >
whom
they endeavoured to apprehend but said John Liddell< no role >
escaped
and ran away leaving his Bayonet on the GroundThat they secured
said Richard Rogers< no role >
who had a Bayonet also and after some time
confessed that said John Liddell< no role >
was the person who escaped
and told them that he lived at No. 9 in Orchard Street Westmr.
where they apprehended himAnd the said Francis Ansell< no role >
says that he was with said Aldridge Hawkes< no role >
and assisted him in
apprehending said Rogers and Liddell and picked up the
Bayonet now produced, dropped by the said Liddell when he escaped
