before me this 8th. day of March 1766
Who being upon Oath says that Yesterday about 11 o'Clock
in the forenoon between the Wand. Eleven Mile Stone on
the Rumford Road he overtook a Person with a new
Portmantan behind him who was making an agreement
with a Man who was driving a Calf Cart to carry his
Portmantan in his Cart to Chelmsford
that the Man agreed
to carry it thither for a Shilling and to have six pence
Mormore if he got into Chelmsford
by seven o'Clock at
Night that the Man then rode Up to him and asked
him if he had seen the Harwick Machine or Flygoles
and said he shou'd be glad to go in the Machine and then
wou'd send his Horse back again which was his Uncle
says they then rode on towards Rumford together and he this Informt.
agreed to bring back his horse if he cou'd meet with a Machine
says they went to an Inn in the Market in Rumford and enquired
after the Machine which they found past by at seven in the Morning
says sd. Person talked with the Ostler
about the Price of a Post Chain
Etc. but that they rode on to the
white Hart
Mecorn at Hare Street but
cou'd not get a Chain & therefore rode on to the White Hart
at
Brentwood
from which place he did take a Chaise but waited
until the Cart come up with his Postmantan which made it
near three o'Clock before he set out dressed in a new Suit of
brown mixed Clothes, new Silver Spurs new diamond cut knee
Buckler and new hatt with a Gold band
