Examination TextThe Examination of Esther Vallen singlewoman lodging at Mrs Kennedy's in Castle Street near the Mews in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this third Day of August in the year of our Lord 1756. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 30 years of age and never was married bound an apprentice kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together, that her father Andrew Vallen was a Victualler and lived in and rented an house in Castle Street aforesaid for the space of eight years at the yearly rent of 28 pounds besides taxes, and there died, which is about five years ago, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Samuel Sunderland a Victualler at the Horse and Groom in Castle Street aforesaid had carnal knowledge of her body about the month of December last in the cellar in the said Samuel Sunderland's house and several times afterwards at the same place at which or one of which times he the said Samuel Sunderland did beget on her body the said child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Samuel Sunderland is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox.
