| Examination Text | The Examination of Esther Vallen singlewoman in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 20th Day of December in the year of our Lord 1756. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is about 30 years of age and never was married, that she was on the sixth day of December instant delivered in the workhouse of aforesaid of a female bastard child (since christened Sarah) yet living and is become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Samuel Sunderland a Victualler at the Horse and Groom in Castle Street near the Mews had carnal knowledge of her body on or about the month of December last past in the cellar of the house of him the said Samuel Sunderland and several times afterwards at the same place at which or one of which times he the said Samuel Sunderland did beget on her body the said female bastard child, that he the said Samuel Sunderland is the true and only father that thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Benjamin Cox. |
