Examination TextThe Examination of Susanna Cross taken this 14th Day of March 1774. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 21 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Bullock a Cutler near Durham Yard in the Strand in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of one whole year and upwards all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 5 pounds diet and lodging, that she quitted the said service about April last, that she never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year [nor] paid any parish taxes, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Richard Brickwood, a journeyman to Mr. Leslie, a Surgeon in Buckingham Street York Buildings, had carnal knowledge of her body about the month of July last in and upon a bed in a fore room up two pair of stairs at the house of the said Mr. Leslie in Brick Street, and one other time afterwards in the same place at which or one of which times he the said Richard Brickwood did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Richard Brickwood is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
