Examination TextThe Examination of Ann Palmer at the Mercers Arms in Mercer Street in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this fifth day of October 1775. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 22 years of age and upwards, that she never was married, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Chapman a Victualler at the sign of the Mercers Arms in Mercers Street for the space of one year and three months at the yearly wages of 5 pounds diet and lodging, quitted the said Mr Chapman's service about 14 months ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Samuel Chapman at a house near the sign of the Running Footman in Charles Street by Berkeley Square had carnal knowledge of her body some time in the month of March last on a table in the parlour in the said Mr Chapman's house in Mercers Street and several times afterwards in the same place at which or one which times he the said Samuel Chapman did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Samuel Chapman is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
