Examination TextThe Examination of Jane Holmes a servant to Mr Morris a Triming shop [sic] in that part of Chandos Street which is in the Parish of St Paul Covent Garden taken this 15th Day of September in the year 1778. This Examinant on her oath saith she is 25 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Mansell a Knife Handle maker in Orange Court in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of three years all under one hiring at the yearly wages of 5 pounds for the first years and 6 pounds for the last year diet and lodging, quitted the same about 10 months ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year nor paid any parish taxes since, and this Examinant on her oath further saith that she was on the eighth day of November last delivered at the house of Mr Mansells in Orange Court aforesaid of a female bastard child (since christened Ann) yet living and is become chargeable to the Parish aforesaid, and that Simon Mansell a Knife Handle maker in Orange Court aforesaid did beget on her body the said female bastard Child, and that he the said Simon Mansell is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
