Examination TextThe Examination of Eleanor Merry lodging at Mr Sadler's Peruke maker in St Martin's Lane in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this 13th Day of October 1776. This Examinant on her oath saith that she 17 years of age and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was born in the Kingdom of Ireland as she hath been informed and verily believes. And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Thomas Evans Esq of [?] near Croydon in Surrey had carnal knowledge of her body about the month of February last at the house of Mrs. Pyke's in Green Street in the back parlour in the said house in and upon a bed there and several times afterwards at the said Mr Evans' Chambers in the Temple at which or one of which times he the said Thomas Evans did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said Thomas Evans is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Thomas Bullard.
