Examination TextThe Examination of Mary Huff in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this third Day of August 1776. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 20 years of age, that she never was married bound an apprentice kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor was yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together, that her Father William Huff is a Shoemaker by trade and lives in and rents an house in Chapel Alley in the Parish aforesaid, and has lived in and rented the said house for the space of several years at the yearly rent of 10 pounds besides taxes. And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that William Lightbourn a Porter and plys for the Brokers by Fleet Market had carnal knowledge of her body (but the particular time she cannot remember) at an old Cloaths Shop on Saffron Hill and several times at the same place at which or one of which times he the said William Lightbourn did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said William Lightbourn is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the third Day of August 1776 before Thomas Bullard.
