| Examination Text | The Examination of Catherine Hamilton in the Workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields, taken this 19th Day of March in the year 1778. This Examinant on her Oath saith That she is 29 years of age and is the Widow of John Hamilton (who died six or seven years ago as she hath been informed and verily believes to be true) to whom she was married in the City of Edinburgh about Eleven years ago, That since the death of her said husband (she having no child living) she was a yearly hired servant to Mrs. Langdon opposite Hanover Street in Long Acre in the parish aforesaid for the space of thee years all under one hiring at the yearly wages of five pounds diet and lodging, quitted the same about four years ago, That she hath not kept house rented a tenement of ten pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been a yearly hired servant in any one place for twelve months together since, And this Examinant on her Oath saith that she was on the twenty sixth day of February last Delivered in the Workhouse of a Bastard Child (since Christened Mary) yet living and is become chargeable to the parish aforesaid, And that Joseph Brush lodging at No.9 in Wardour Street had carnal knowledge of her Body at No.9 in [Bonnet? Barnet?] Street on a Bed in a Room up one pair of stairs there at which time he the said Joseph Brush did beget in her body the said Female Bastard Child (but the particular time she does not Remember), And that he the said Joseph Brush is the true and only father thereof, and no man else.
