Examination TextThe Examination of Ann Tilby in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken upon oath this 24th Day of May 1765. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 23 years of age, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a yearly hired servant to Mr Grimes, a Coal Merchant in Scotland Yard in the Parish aforesaid for the space of one year and four months at the yearly wages of 3 pounds 10 shillings diet and lodging, quitted the same about six weeks ago, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now Great with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that John Rymes, an apprentice the said Mr Grimes had carnal knowledge of her body in of October last in and upon a bed in a room up three pair of stairs forward at the house of Mr Grimes aforesaid, at which or one which times he the said John Rymes did beget with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant of, and that he the said John Rymes is the true and only father thereof and no man else. Sworn the day and year abovesaid before Peter Planck.
