Examination TextThe Examination of Jane Burden singlewoman taken upon oath this 23rd Day of February in the year of our Lord 1741. Who upon her voluntary oath saith she is about 24 years of age, that she never was married, but that she was on Thursday the fifth day of February instant delivered of a Male bastard child in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields within the liberty Westminster in the County of Middlesex (which was since christened Joseph), and which said Male bastard child was chargeable unto the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields from the birth thereof until the 20th Day of the said month of February on which the said Male bastard child died, and this Examinant further saith that one Joseph Williams a Footman to a Gentlewoman who lodges at one Mr Watson's in Charges Street in Piccadilly had carnal knowledge of her body some time in about the month of April last past on a chair in the fore parlour in the house at Mr Donnadieu year, a Wine Merchant in James Street by the Haymarket (to whom she was then a servant), and then in the Kitchen of the said house several times since at one of which times he begot on her body the said male bastard child, and that he the said Joseph Williams is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
