20th. day of Jany 1797 in the Parish of
St. George Hanover Square at the house
of Thomas Jones< no role > the Sign of ye Bricklayers
Arms in Duke Street Grosvenor Square
before Anthy Gell< no role > his Majesty's Coroner
for the sd. City and Liberty touching
the Death of Charles Bates< no role > an Infant
Aged [..] two Years and six months then & there lying
dead as follow. to Wit

Elizth. Bates< no role > the Mother of the deceased being sworn deposeth
that her Husband herself and Family lodge at No. 9 in Chandler
Street Duke Street Grosvener Square and that on [..]
Sunday morning last (the 15th. Instant) about 9 o'Clock that she
went out of her Room down Stairs for a Pitcher of
Water & left the deceased in the Room and she returned
up Stairs in about three minutes and when she came
into the Room she found the Child all in a Flame
upon which she caught hold of the childs arm and a
Woman that followed her up Stairs wrapped him
up in her Apron and extingiushed the Flames and
sent for Mr. Robinson of Duke Street Surgeon and
Apothecary and be tried every means for the Childs
Recovey but without the desired Effect as the deceased
expired on the Tuesday morning following (the 17th. Intt.)
