1767 at the Parish of St. Martin in the Fields
within the Liberty of Westmr . in the County of
Middlesex

on an Inquisition touching the Death
of Mary Gardiner< no role > lying dead in the said Parish
Liberty and County.

Teresia Hand< no role > Servant to Mrs. Ellison in Broad Court
in the Parish of St. Martin in the Fields , within the Liberty
of Westmr. on her Oath saith, That Mary Gardiner< no role > that Deced
was likewise a Servant to Mr. Ellison and had lived there
about a week, Says that Mr. Swinhoe< no role > (whose Christian
name Dept. believes to be Thomas) was a Visiter to Mrs
Ellison and had been at her House some time, Says
that Mrs. Ellison and Mr. Swinhoe went out together
yesterday Afternoon and returned about Nine o'Clock,
in the Evening, Says that they went to Supper on some
Cold Roast Beef and Sallad, when Mr. Ellison charged
the Deced with having given away come of her Beef
Says that between Ten and Eleven o'Clock, this Dept. &
the Deced being in the Kitchen together, when Dept.
wid to Deced I think Mrs. Ellison is Mad, what does
she think could go with her Beef, to which Deced
Answered, He (meaning Mr. Swinhoe as Dept. believes)
is worse than she, Says that Mrs. Ellison being at the
top of the Stairs, Said, [..] wife How dare you mention him,
Says that Mr. Swinhoe immediately came down into
the Kitchen and asked Deced what she had said of
him, to which Deced replied, I said that you said
the Meat could not go fairly, upon which Mr. Swinhoe
with his open Hand struch the Deced upon her left
Check, Says that the Deced there upon Staggered and
immediately fell backwards upon the Stone Pavement
with great force, with the back part of her Head
against the Stones, Says that the Deced lay upon the
Floor Speech less and not able to move herself, Says
that she Saw Blood upon the Floor, which Dept.
observed
