At the General Quarter Session of the Peace of our Sovereign Lord the King holden for
the County of Middx at Hicks Hall in Saint John Street in the County aforesaid by
adjournment on Thursday the tenth day of April in the twenty eighth year of the
reign of our Sovereign Lord George the second King of Great Britain Etc before Thomas
Lane
< no role > George Errington< no role > Bartholomew Hammond< no role > Francis Bedwell< no role > Esquires and others their
Fellows Justices of our said Lord the King assigned to keep the Peace in the County aforesaid
and also to hear and determine divers Felonies Trespasses and other Misdeeds committed in
the same County.

Whereas Robert Hawkes< no role > exhibited his humble Petition unto this Court at this
present General Quarter Session of the Peace holden for the County of Middx by
adjournment on Tuesday the eighth day of April instant Setting forth That the Petitioner
was put out Apprentice by the Parish of Low Layton in the County of Essex to one
John Dumbleton< no role > who is by Trade a Pump maker and Keeps a Publick House in the
Parish of Saint Mary White Chappell in the County of Middx about eleven years
ago to serve him and learn the Art and Mistery of a Pump maker untill he should
arrive to the Age of twenty four Years and has four Years to serve from the second
day of March last And that for the whole eleven years that the Petitioner hath lived
with his said Master instead of being learnt his Trade of a Pump maker hath been
almost constantly employed in drawing of Beer both Sundays and Working days and
has never been suffered to go to Church once during the whole eleven years And
that the Petitioner hath undergone violent Severities and Ill usage from his said
Master during the whole time that he hath so lived with him by being beat with Sticks
and Whips and by flinging the Petitioner in a Horse Pond in a Cold Frosty Morning
without the least Provocation And that on the fourteenth day of March last the Petitioner's
Master knockt him down with a Hand Saw and beat and bruised the Petitioner so
violently that he was not able to see out of one of his Eyes for some days And the Petitioner
therefore most humbly prayed this Court to be pleased to order the Petitioner to be discharged
forthwith from his said Master and that he might make the Petitioner a Satisfaction suitable
for the Injury he had so sustained or that this Court might make such other Order in
the Premisses as to this Court should seem most meet Whereupon it was by an Order
made by this Court on the said eighth day of April instant Ordered that the said John
Dumbleton
< no role > should attend this Court on this present Thursday the tenth day of April
instant at ten of the Clock in the Forenoon to hear and abide the Judgement and Determination
of this Court touching the Matters contained in the said Petition and the Complaint of the said
Robert Hawkes< no role > , the aforesaid Session being now on the same day holden by adjournment for
the said County of Middx Now upon hearing of what was alledged by the said Robert
Hawkes
< no role > and his Council and also by the said John Dumbleton< no role > forasmuch as it appeareth
to this Court upon Oath that the said John Dumbleton< no role > hath divers times beaten the said
Robert Hawkes< no role > and given him very immoderate Correction without reasonable Cause and
that the Substance of the said Petition is true It is Ordered by this Court that the
