January 1793

By Adjournment same day

Resolved that Thomas Aris< no role > be permitted to serve the Prisoners
in the New Prison and House of Correction at Clerkenwell with Bread
until the County day of the next Session.

By Adjournment same day.

Several Petitions having been presented on behalf of the
Prisoners complaining of the unhealthiness of the Prison called the House
of Correction Clerkenwell and that a Fever which endangered their Lives
raged in the Prison; and it appearing to the Court by the Report of the
Apothecary attending Clerkenwell Bridewell and New Prison that there is
an unusual number of Persons sick in Clerkenwell Bridewell , The Court
directed Mr Chamberlayne who had for some time past officiated for Mr
Gibbs the Apothecary to attend the Court, who informed the Court that he
attends the Prison daily, that there are several Persons in Clerkenwell
Bridewell Sick of Fevers that there are Thirty two Men on the Mens side
and Seven Women on the Womens side afflicted with Fevers but that in
his Opinion there is not any putrid or Gaol Fever in Clerkenwell Bridewell
That the great number of Persons stowed in a small space like the Sick
Ward tends to increase the complaint as some have relapsed by staying
there when recovered but that several who are well enough to go down
have not Cloaths to cover them. That they have not proper Bed Cloaths
in the Sick Ward and that there is no other want or deficiency every thing
being furnished which he directs to be procured for the use of the Sick.

Ordered that if any Persons be at this time detained in the
New Prison or House of Correction for Fees only they be immediatly discharged

Resolved that those who are destitute of Cloathing be immediately
supplied with such Cloathing as may be necessary in the cheapest manner.

Resolved that a Committee of the Gentlemen present do
meet on Saturday next at 12 o Clock to consider the state of the Prisoners
with respect to Health and Cloathing.

That Mr.Gibbs and Mr.Chamberlayne his Assistant be
ordered to attend the said Committee.
